  • Collection, retrieval, communication and optimal use of health related data, information and knowledge
  • Inter-relationship between computer and communications with science and medical research, education and practice
  • Uses Information Science methods and technologies for problem solving and decision making
  • Assuring quality healthcare – studying the principles and providing solutions
  • Covers: research, academia, operations and commercial
  • Delivered by: operational health practitioners, managers, academics, researchers, educators, scientists and technologists

Victoria University has a Graduate School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health, within the nursing profession there is an emerging field of Nursing Informatics which is currently being formulated. Nursing Informatics is the synergy between Nursing Science and the cognitive, information and computer sciences.

At Victoria University a health informatics group was formed in 2004 to allow staff from a number of schools and institutes to meet, discuss and collaborate. We meet occaisonally throughout the year for a lunch time or evening seminar. The work in the health informatics area is typically at a postgraduate level and is usually cross disciplinary in nature.

An Analysis of Health Informatics Capability in New Zealand

In 2005 Victoria university in conjunction with Otago, Canterbury and Auckland won a TEC GIPI grant of $50,000 to investigate the health informatics capability in New Zealand. A team was formed consisting of the main players in the New Zealand health informatics university sector. The main output of this research project was the final report:

  • Karolyn Kerr, Rowena Cullen, Jan Duke, Alec Holt, Ray Kirk, Peter Komisarczuk, Jim Warren and Shona Wilson. (2006). Health Informatics Capability Development in New Zealand. A report to the Tertiary Education Commission, November 2006.
  • Developing Nursing Informatics

iSOFT and FRST are funding the development of nursing language in health software. The project is led by PhD student Shona Wilson. See the news item:
