My current research is centred on Grid and Cloud computing. The Grid is a middleware infrastructure that leverages considerable computing power for use in large scientific computations. A typical Grid user (Astronomy, Bioinformatics, Environmental Science, Particle physics, etc.) will use the grid system to automatically perform massively parallel computations primarily for data analysis. While the overall Grid goal of providing scientists access to massive amounts of computational power seems at first a simple one, the underlying technologies are the focus of much research in Computer Science and offer many interesting problems that requiring novel research. Cloud computing is an instantiation of the principles of Utility computing, and I am doing research on the federation of Clouds using economic, or market oriented and autonomic principles.
I have recently published a book Market Oriented Grid and Utility Computing with Rajkumar Buyya from the University of Melbourne

Research
The specific research projects that I am working on are:
- Economic resource allocation in the Grid I am working on an Economic Meta Scheduler for GT4, which is based on many of the principles developed for the NOMAD (Negotiated Object Mobility, Access and Deployment) and the CORA architectures (Co-allocative Overbooked Resource Allocation.
I am currently co-editing a book Market Oriented Grid and Utility Computing with Rajkumar Buyya from the University of Melbourne.
- Secure and Verifiable Auctions The idea here is that Anyone can run a trustworthy auction. Using cryptographic and peer techniques this work looks at removing the need for trust in the auctioneer. This work is both being carried out in the general context as well as feeding into the Grid Economic Meta Scheduler.
- Reputation This is a new project that stemmed from the need for webservices to be associated with some form of reputation. I am looking at a general scheme which aims to interconnect different reputation generators and their specific viewpoints.
- Other Projects I am involved in SLAs and migration in service containers, SLAs and QoS scheduling and Content Distribution Networks.

My PhD thesis was on the development of the NOMAD software architecture. NOMAD provided support for mobile, distributed applications, allowing such applications to locate and obtain resources when and where they were needed. Nomad is no longer an active project - but many of its ideas and concepts have influenced or live on in my current Grid research. My MSc thesis was on load balancing.
